Event Recap: API Testing and What Makes Good Test Case Design?

We recently held an inaugural Auckland Tosca Test Engineers meet up covering the topics; API testing and what makes good test case design?

TTC Asia Pac Shane Ross

Following on from the successful Wellington Tosca Test Engineers meet up it was Auckland’s turn for the Tosca Test Engineer community to get together. And they did. Some 20 people converged on 15th October 2019 at event host Mercury Energy for a meet, greet and a good discussion on all things Tosca.

Organised via Meet up, there was a bit of discussion ahead of the event on candidate topics for this first event. Wellington’s initial event had three speakers talking to topics of AS1 and AS2 certification, Exploratory Testing with Tosca and the functional differences from Tosca V11 through to V12 and beyond. Auckland went technically deep for the first session with two presenters talking to topics of API Testing and What makes good Test Case Design.

For API Testing, TTC's Head of Automation Tim Rankin-Mills addressed the ability for Tosca to automate beyond the UI. He demonstrated the ability for Tosca to scan a given API, including the ability for Tosca to analyse the whole of a SalesForce deployment just by scanning the SalesForce API. With organisations looking to automate more and more of their testing, the ability to quickly and easily create test automation scripts from APIs is a key enabler to low-cost automation test creation and maintenance. You can see Tim's presentation here.

Following Tim was Janitha (JC) Mullage. Key to any maintainable test automation framework is good Test Case Design. JC took the room through a comprehensive demonstration of how a model based approach to test automation helped the test engineer deliver on good test case design – and highlighted the work required to build the same environment if you were scripting everything from scratch. From re-usable components to ‘drag and drop’ to work with templates to create versioned test assets, JC took the time to outline what was available to deliver on good test case design and how to use it. You can see JC's presentation here.

A couple of people were asking about how to get started with Tosca - AS1and AS2are the best option. Online. and free!!

Our next meet will be in February / March 2020. Invites and the event will be published in January 2020.
